A. Shipena Secondary School began in 1985 with around 700 learners, reflecting modest yet solid beginnings. Over the years, its reputation and demand surged by 2015, total enrollment had risen to approximately 1,200 learners across Grades 8 through 12. The school's popularity and academic improvements, particularly under Principal Moses Haufiku’s leadership, have contributed to this growth. A glimpse into its Grade 9 cohort in 2019 shows how dynamic and competitive enrollment has become: 230 learners were promoted from Grade 8, and 56 learners were set to repeat Grade 9 due to not passing Grade 10. This highlights fluctuating but significant learner numbers at each grade level, demonstrating both the school’s expanding reach and the ongoing challenges in scholastic progression.

school background   A. Shipena Secondary School, located in the Soweto area of Katutura, Windhoek, was established in 1985 and offers Grades 8 to 12. Named after Ananias Shipena, the school began with about 700 learners and 16 teachers and has grown to become one of the most respected schools in the Khomas region. Despite early challenges, such as the bombing of its administration block in 1986 and limited resources, the school has shown resilience and steady progress. In 1987, it acquired its first computer through a local radio program, symbolizing its determination to embrace growth and innovation. Under the leadership of its current principal, Moses Haufiku, who took over in 2015, A. Shipena has greatly improved its academic performance moving from 16th place in the region to consistently ranking among the top schools.
